Culturally Attuned Therapist for Diverse Communities

Welcome!

I'm so glad you're here.

I'm Drs. Amelie van den Brink-El Makkaoui, a Registered Art Psychotherapist (ATR) committed to supporting children, young adults and families in coping with challenges related to ADHD and trauma. My practice blends traditional and innovative therapeutic techniques, including Art Psychotherapy, Emotional Freedom Tapping (EFT), Play Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Emotional Intelligence guidance, to address emotional and behavioral difficulties at their core.

With over 12 years of international experience supporting children and adults facing:

  • severe psychological disorders (Schizophrenia, Bipolar, PTSD, Major Depressive Disorder/Depression)

  • special needs (ADHD, Autism, PDD-NOS)

  • and other challenges (divorce, perfectionism, sexual and verbal abuse)

I have worked across various settings, including psychiatry, education, summer camps, day treatment clinics, humanitarian disaster zones, and private practice. These experiences have shown me the profound and life-changing potential of integrated therapies.

I've had the privilege of working with diverse cultural communities, including African, Asian, European, and mixed/third-culture families.

I hold a BA in Psychology/Art Therapy (magna cum laude) from the College of Santa Fe, an MA in Art Therapy (cum laude) from New York University, and certifications in Play Therapy, EFT, Internal Family Systems Therapy from various training institutions.

My approach is holistic, humanistic, and psychodynamic, tailored to meet each client's unique temperament, cultural background, and life circumstances. I'm passionate about empowering youth to better understand their emotions, neurological or social challenges while fostering self-confidence and self-awareness that lasts far beyond the therapy room.

Additionally, I work closely with parents, providing them with tools and insights to support their own growth and that of their child(ren). Together, we aim to create a nurturing environment that encourages healthy solutions and resilience.

I'm excited to connect with you and explore how we can work together to support you or your loved one on the path to healing, growth, and emotional well-being!
